Research Question

When tasked with exploring a research topic about something we have read so far, my mind immediately went to Cain and Abel. Because I have never read the Book of Genesis, this story was completely new to me. After reading the excerpt from the N-town plays, I had many questions about what was left unsaid in the story. For instance, why did Cain hide from God the evil deed he committed, when he knew that God would eventually find out? Is this meant to represent our futile attempts at lying when we know that the truth always comes out? In addition, I was curious as to why Cain so readily accepts punishment for murdering Abel? Did Cain want to escape from God's good grace all along? Was he in fact truly regretful of his actions? Furthermore, why did Cain see that killing Abel was the only solution? These and many more questions are what motivated me to explore the different interpretations of Cain and Abel to try to discover the answers to these unsolved mysteries.

  1. Take this with a grain of salt, as this is something I'm personally interested in. I think something perhaps worth looking into is the family tree of Cain (both his parents [Adam/Eve] and his giant list of descendants). Was Cain predestined to fall from God's grace? Are his descendants also walking down that same path?
