Fight Club Spoilers :( And Tips
When I saw "Fight Club" on the syllabus I wanted to see how it related to Poe. I immediately googled Fight Club and Poe and was greated with multiple papers on personality disorders within Poe's works and the major twist of Flight Club. It was then I knew that I had messed up and spoiled the ending for myself. Since I already had spoiled something, I decided to invite my friend to watch the movie with me since it is her favorite movie and I knew she would be able to point out important scenes and stylistic choices to me.
The first thing she instructed me to look out for was the placement of the camera. The way a majority of the scenes were shot, with this disembodied feel, with the camera making the audience feel more like a spectator. This would cause the viewers to be more likely to see Tyler and The Narrator as two different people.
It was her who pointed out that Tyler would flash across the screen four times before his character appeared to The Narrator. These flickers of Tyler would always occur whenever The Narrator has a moment of anger or any other negative emotion. This serves to show that Tyler would appear to feed off of The Narrator's emotions. They also could be considered to be an homage to Tyler's habbit of splicing films.
The last major thing that my friend had pointed out to me was the film's score. The opening sequence is of neurons firing and in the background is a super grungy/synth/rock song. As the movie progresses the opening theme can be heard throughout the movie as the events get increasing wild and the characters become more intense. The reoccurance of the theme is used to signify to the audiance than the next action is important to the plot and developement of the film.
Overall, I knew I should not have looked at spoilers (even though it was unintentional) but I think it added to my expereicne of the movie. I was able to look for clues that Tyler was not real and it helped me to piece the movie together a lot quicker than I probably would have been able to if I did not know the twist. Also here is the song from the ending scene when the buildings blow up. It's really cool.
It's good that you had a guide throughout the movie because I missed so many of the pints you mentioned! I definitely have to watch it again and looks out for these things.
ReplyDeleteI am DEFINITELY watching this movie again! I got very spectator-poetic-Gatsby vibes throughout my first experience with the movie, and I'll be sure to keep my eyes peeled for the things you mentioned here. Thanks for this!
