The ending scene
There were many scenes in Fight club that I had trouble understanding, but the last scene is one that confused me a lot. At first when I watched it I thought that the narrator was trying to kill himself and just accidentally missed. After thinking about it more I feel like there's more to it than that.
One theory that I thought of was that it might've been what Tyler wanted the narrator to do. During the whole movie Tyler would constantly get himself hurt or put himself in danger. Like the scene with the car or the chemical burns. If I expected one of them to put the gun to their head and almost kill themselves, I would think it would be Tyler because he is crazy enough to do it and still survive. I think that this might have been Tyler's final test for the narrator to show that the narrator shares Tyler's characteristics, including his recklessness. I don't think that the narrator really killed Tyler. I think that the narrator became Tyler.

Wow, I never thought of that. I actually agree with you point about him becoming Tyler.
ReplyDeleteI am in total agreement here. Tyler is always wanting the Narrator to hit bottom. There's nothing more rock-bottom than suicide, and him shooting himself and absorbing Tyler would provide justification as to why the men are not hunting him at the end of the film.
ReplyDeleteI thought the narrator had (not only missed) but purposely shot himself in the mouth because Tyler was always speaking on his behalf, and by shooting himself through the face, he killed off Tyler's influence. However, I hadn't considered the reasons as to why Tyler was egging him onto this path. This makes a lot of sense, and when I rewatch the movie, I will definitely keep this in mind!
