A Scandal in Bohemia

Even though we read this on Thursday, I want to comment on this story because I really enjoyed it. First of all, it was short enough that I could read it more than once and thus better understand Watson's description of Irene as the woman in Sherlock's eyes. His strong emotions and praise of this woman surprised me considering that Sherlock has very high standards. Another reason that I enjoyed this piece so much involved the relationship between Sherlock and Watson. Although Sherlock is constantly proving to Watson that he is an inferior detective, Sherlock still shares his plans of how he plans to create the illusion of a fire in the building to force Irene to show him the photograph. This was much more interesting to read and reason with the detectives than Poe. In the Purloined Letter, the issue of a stolen letter is presented, Dupin rambles about the Law of Probability, and then suddenly he reveals the letter. The excitement of using clues, following suspects, and discoveries is lost in the Purloined Letter. Lastly, the unexpected ending of Irene skipping town and leaving a letter for Sherlock is an added bonus. She even becomes the detective herself in following Sherlock to his residence!!
