Narcissus and Echo

     In class we spent a good part of out time talking about how Oedipa can be seen as Echo and Metzger as Narcissus. However, I didn't quite see it. Metzger seemed to be pursuing Oedipa more than she was him. He definitely was noticing her. In my opinion, Oedipa seemed more like Narcissus since she never noticed what Metzger really looked like.

     However, as chapter three began, I realized that Oedipa can be seen as Echo, but not with Metzger, with Pierce. Oedipa describes how Pierce would, "... spend hours peering into each one (stamps), ignoring her," making the stamp collection the water. This allusion seems far more probable to me. Since Pierce is dead and Oedipa still is involved with him, or what is left of him.


Side note: Metzger's name also comes from a psych perspective. Metzger, being Wolfgang Metzger, a famous figure in the world of Gestalt psychology. Gestalt being the theory the the human brain sees thewhole from a sum of part. This image shows the Gestalt Theory.






Completely unrelated but Avengers: Infinity War comes out this weekend and what will happen in that movie is a mystery.
