The Crying of Lot 49

Ok what?? This story is so weird and I am starting to be convinced that Oedipa is a LSD user who is desperately trying to return herself to normality, which is why she goes to find Peirce and is so insistent of leaving behind her husband(Mucho Maas. I think Oedipa is so fixed on leaving her past life behind because although she is a hallucinating drug-user and maybe alcoholic, she still has the framework that something was better before her life now and that person was Pierce. Perhaps the hunt for pierce is the hunt for normality. She does showcase some signs of resistance such as, puttin g on layers to prevent Metzger from having sex with her and hanging up on Dr. Hillarious, who on a side note is really weird as well.

I am still a little confused as to how Metzger fits in to this conspiracy that Oedipa is sane only enough to leave her past life. Maybe Metzger was a hero of Oedipa or even Pierce when he was young and this leads to the allure of him? I will keep the class updated on my wild theory.

  1. Yes, I agree. While Oedipa doesn't exactly express her undying love for her husband, there doesn't seem to be any motivation behind her affair with Metzger. In fact, her disregard for her husband contrasts Oedipa from Oedipus Rex, who devoted his life to helping his kingdom and love his wife very much (even though not in the way a son should love a mother.) Perhaps Mr. Strickland's theory about Metzger and Oedipa being the center of the action will help explain this romance as we continue to read.
