SotS is a Terrible Mystery (But a Good Story)

Alright so this class is called Mystery in Story, so when I read these stories I expect some sort of clue trail. I kept trying to find where this story was going, what the twist would be, but in the end the twist that Moon is the one telling the story is almost completely unfounded. There is some sense that he was embarrassed for the actions of the character Moon within the story, but the context of it suggests that his actions were so terrible that anyone could feel shame for them, clearing Moon of suspicion at the time. When the twist is revealed, it only makes sense because we know that the story is about the man who got the scar, which was revealed only a few paragraphs earlier. But the story overall is really good. I liked the idea that Moon cannot face what he has done and has to take the perspective of the tragic hero to even tell it. He bashes himself for his crimes, for being too rational. It is a really good character study, but a bad mystery in my opinion.

  1. I agree that the story is not really a 'mystery story', but why is this so important? I think that when you start reading any story, you should read it for what it is out of the context of any genre. When you have preconceived notions for how a story 'should be' you will often miss things that are out of character for the genre, or judge works unfairly. I agree that the story was pretty good.

  2. I was also looking for some sort of clue throughout the story as to what the mystery even was, and was pretty disappointed to not find anything until the end. Looking back, though, maybe that's what made the mystery so...mysterious. Admittedly, I was pretty shocked when the truth was revealed at the end, since not only was I not expecting the solution, but I wasn't even expecting the mystery.
