The Surprise of the Sword

With the techniques of the writing and the detailed narration, I was very surprised to discover that the narrator was Vincent Moon. Although I felt as though the narrator wrote this piece to confuse the reader and prevent this discovery, I enjoyed it more than my other confusions during Piers Plowman and Crying of lot 49. This is perhaps because of the descriptive imagery that the narrator uses to describe the scene, even if he does shift to a different scenario a few moments later. Reading the story a second time revealed that the narrator hinted that he was Vincent Moon when stating his embarrassment at Moon's faking his injury to avoid battle.

  1. I am also a fan of this style of reveal, which I noticed when we watched Fight Club a few weeks ago. In that movie, there are tons of clues leading up to the reveal, which to me really signifies a good writer. And yes, Borges' mastery really shows through during the scene about the embarrassment.

  2. I also like the way in which things are revealed. In the end, you feel kinda stupid for missing all the hints that were dropped.
